The Farm

Grow food. Grow skills. Grow opportunity.

The All Things Good Farm is the planned farm of the Hands 4Life Generations of Wisdom Micro-Campus in Homa Bay County, Kenya. It will be a place to learn farming as a trade, sell produce and start small farm businesses, while it grows good food for orphaned children and elders.

A working farm, not a display

This farm will turn farm skills into income.

The planned Hands 4Life farm will grow food, teach and earn at the same time. People will learn systems they can run on their own land and turn into farm businesses of their own.

  • Children

will learn where food comes from.

  • Elders

will teach farming and earn from farm and craft skills.

  • Young adults

will learn to start farm businesses.

  • Visitors and neighbors

    will take practical ideas home.

Expected outcomes

What the farm is designed to change.

These are goals, not results yet. Hands 4Life will track each one and report on progress.

The main goal. Planned for the years ahead

Young people, adults and elders start and run sustainable small businesses

Orphaned children as they grow into young adults, young adults from the wider community, and elders through farm and craft work, each earning their own income.

  • SDG 1 No Poverty
  • SDG 8 Decent Work and Economic Growth

What we will track

  • People who finish entrepreneurship and skills training
  • Businesses started
  • Businesses still running after 12 months
  • Income earned by trainees
  • Building on work underway now

Children and elders have food, clean water and healthcare

    What we will track

    • Health checks given
    • Children and elders who get food and water support each month
    • SDG 1 No Poverty
    • SDG 2 Zero Hunger
    • SDG 3 Good Health and Well-being
  • Planned for the years ahead

A model that increasingly pays its own way

Farm sales and trainee businesses will help fund the work, so it depends less on donations over time.

    What we will track

    • Share of costs met by local income such as farm sales
    • Programs run by local leaders
    • SDG 8 Decent Work and Economic Growth
    • SDG 17 Partnerships for the Goals

SDG labels name the UN Sustainable Development Goals each outcome contributes to.

Learning by doing

What people learn here will go home with them.

No desks required. On the Hands 4Life farm, a student will be able to study biology by watching plants grow and learn business by tracking what the farm sells.

  • Food production

Vegetables, fruit, moringa and other nutrient-rich foods.

  • Nutrition

How food, preparation and daily choices keep children and elders healthy.

  • Agriculture

Planting, soil, water, harvest, compost and farm management.

  • Science and technology

Aquaponics, solar power, irrigation and water storage as hands-on science.

  • Small business

    Budgeting, pricing, records and sales.

  • Generations together

Elders will share farming knowledge and traditions. Children and young adults will bring new ideas and technology.

  • Care for creation

Using land, water, animals and resources well, as stewardship of what God has provided.

  • Some of the best teachers on this farm will be elders.

Healthy living

Healthy living, God's way.

God has already given many of the basics we need to live well: good food, movement, purpose, faith and strong relationships.

Gardening keeps people moving. On the farm, vegetables, fruit, moringa and fish will provide nutritious food, and trees, bees and aquaponics will show how healthy soil, water and food systems work together.

Hands 4Life wants people to live healthier and longer, with strength, purpose and community. Whatever your faith, the benefits are practical: better nutrition and regular physical activity for every age.

Hands 4Life serves everyone, regardless of faith.

Food first. Enterprise next.

Feed the campus. Sell the surplus. Put it back to work.

Young adults will learn to produce something useful, know what it costs, find a market, keep records and reinvest.

  1. Step 1

    Feed the campus.

Food will come first, for the people and programs on the campus.

  2. Step 2

    Sell the surplus.

Extra crops and farm products will be sold at market.

  3. Step 3

    Put it back to work.

The income will go back into the farm and Hands 4Life's work in Kenya.

Planned with what Kenya already has

  • Permaculture and soil building
  • Fruit trees and moringa
  • Beekeeping
  • Small livestock
  • Greenhouse
  • Drip irrigation
  • Rainwater storage
